Health risks

Health hazards in the work environment at sea are of a vast spectrum and often more pronounced than in land based professions. Exposures are more severe, areas are more secluded and distances to advanced medical care are generally longer.

Research has shown that seafarers are more prone to accidents at work. They are also more liable to diseases of the heart and circulatory system and to cancer.

Are you wondering about correct security and protection equipment? Seek advice from your safety representative (ombudsman), your superior or possibly your company’s health service (if contracted).

The Swedish Maritime Joint Work Environment Council (Sjöfartens arbetsmiljönämnd, SAN) may also give advice on security measures.
