Thesis on work environment and cancer among Swedish seafarers

News: Dec 05, 2018

The thesis explores health hazards for seafarers in the Swedish merchant fleet, and occupational risks for lung cancer, mesothelioma and hematologic malignancy (HM). A special focus has been exposure to benzene and biomarker levels for work on product or chemical tankers during the mid-1990’ies.

The work consists of a case report on lung cancer and mesothelioma among engine room crewmembers and a web-based survey on work environment exposures and the psychosocial and safety climate in Swedish merchant seafaring. Two papers illustrate exposure to benzene on tankers and odds ratios ("risk") for haematologic malignancy in relation to previous work on tankers.
